My mate’s gone quiet and doesn’t seem themself. What should I do?

Often it’s friends who are best placed to spot changes and so it’s really important to act on anything you feel is not right.

That could be them seeming distant, cancelling plans, not wanting to be part of the normal chat or anything that just seems different.

Importantly, the earlier you reach out, the better.

Remember though, it could take a couple of times of asking before they answer you honestly, so do be persistent if you’re concerned.

Things you can do

  1. The most important thing you can do, is reach out.
  2. Tell them that you’ve noticed they’re a bit quiet.
  3. Reassure them that you’re asking to check they’re ok.
  4. Offer a listening ear.
  5. Offer any support they might need.
  6. Keep trying.
